Summary

In this tantalizing thriller from a #1 New York Times bestselling author, a woman uncovers lifelong secrets as she searches for the truth behind her father's involvement in a heist gone wrong。

Twenty years ago in the dead of night, four seemingly random individuals pulled the ultimate heist and almost walked away with half a million dollars。 But by daybreak, their plan had been shot to hell。 One of them was in the hospital。 One was in jail。 One was dead。 And one got away with it。

Arden Maxwell, the daughter of the man who disappeared all those years ago—presumably with the money, after murdering his accomplice—has never reconciled with her father's abandonment of her and her sister。 After countless personal setbacks she decides to return to her family home near mysterious Caddo Lake, and finally get answers to the many questions that torment her。 Little does she know, two of her father's co-conspirators—a war hero and a corrupt district attorney—are watching her every move。

Ledge Burnet, a rebellious teen at the time of the heist, evaded his jail sentence by enlisting in the army。 Now he's back in town to care for his ailing father—and to keep his eye on the county's corrupt district attorney, whom he suspects was the real murderer。 Although the two are bound to silence because of the crime they committed together, each has spent years waiting and hoping that the other will make a fatal misstep。 But the arrival of their elusive accomplice's daughter, Arden, who may know more about the missing money than she's telling, sets them both on red alert。 She ignites Ledge's determination to expose the D。A。's treachery 。 。 。 and sparks a desire he wishes to deny。

Take it or leave it。 Kept my interest from the beginning。 Well written。 Sex scenes, heist-gone-wrong, plot twists。 Wouldn’t recommend or discourage。 Wouldn’t seek out this author again but if it fell into my lap as this book did, I’d read Brown again。 There are better books but for a toss-away read this did the trick。

This book is a good mystery, with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing until about three quarters of the way through。 It centers around a robbery committed 20 years ago and what happened to the family and money afterwards。 That's the mystery。 The characters are well drawn and realistic, with a reasonable amount of intrigue to keep the reader interested。 There are one or two unrealistic 'endings' though, which keep me from giving this book a 5*, such as, when they eventually find the mone This book is a good mystery, with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing until about three quarters of the way through。 It centers around a robbery committed 20 years ago and what happened to the family and money afterwards。 That's the mystery。 The characters are well drawn and realistic, with a reasonable amount of intrigue to keep the reader interested。 There are one or two unrealistic 'endings' though, which keep me from giving this book a 5*, such as, when they eventually find the money, what they decide to do with it etc。 The ending is just a little glib for me, too, otherwise I did enjoy the book and didn't find myself wanting to skip through it, like I do so many so-called murder-mystery novels these days。 。。。more

This was a mystery with an ending that surprised me。 The characters each had distinct traits and there were lessons learned and reasons why。 My first novel by Sandra Brown。 I'll seek out others by her。 This was a mystery with an ending that surprised me。 The characters each had distinct traits and there were lessons learned and reasons why。 My first novel by Sandra Brown。 I'll seek out others by her。 。。。more

Another twisted endingI have always enjoyed Sandra Brown mystery love stories。 This one was no exception。 The last two chapters were totally unexpected。 With all of the mysteries I read I should have。 I know that I am so happy that I haven't got a Rusty in my life。 Another twisted endingI have always enjoyed Sandra Brown mystery love stories。 This one was no exception。 The last two chapters were totally unexpected。 With all of the mysteries I read I should have。 I know that I am so happy that I haven't got a Rusty in my life。 。。。more

I enjoy everything Sandra Brown writes so much。 They're always juicy with conflict and crime! She's such a good "comfort food" type of read for me。 When I don't know what I'm in the mood for, I pick up and Sandra Brown and I know I'll enjoy it。 I enjoy everything Sandra Brown writes so much。 They're always juicy with conflict and crime! I won this in a GoodReads Giveaway。 Overall, I liked the book and the plot was intriguing enough to keep me interested。 However, there was a lot of character monologuing and over explaining。 Also, there was no real difference between the vocabulary of the characters; if a name wasn't listed, I would have had difficulty telling each character apart because they all spoke/mostly acted the same。 It could have used with more character development as well。 I won this in a GoodReads Giveaway。 Overall, I liked the book and the plot was intriguing enough to keep me interested。 However, there was a lot of character monologuing and over explaining。 Also, there was no real difference between the vocabulary of the characters; if a name wasn't listed, I would have had difficulty telling each character apart because they all spoke/mostly acted the same。 It could have used with more character development as well。 。。。more

Good Sandra Brown thriller。 You know early on who the bad guys are, but there is still some mystery to be solved involving a crime committed years ago。 Ofcourse, good loving also。。。。。 A good read。

Jessie

Good quick read that was well written with a believable, yet surprising twist at the end。

Good: lots of misdirection and red herrings。 Story is addicting。 I love the jumping back and forth between time periodsBad: the side plots feel forced, the romance feel forced, there a lot that's tacked on to a really good story。Ugly: Sandra Brown is from Texas and this story is set in east Texas。 Despite this, it doesn't feel like it。 I can't really place why。3 stars。 Finished it, didn't hate it。 Good book for an airplane or road trip。 Good: lots of misdirection and red herrings。 Story is addicting。 I love the jumping back and forth between time periodsBad: the side plots feel forced, the romance feel forced, there a lot that's tacked on to a really good story。Ugly: Sandra Brown is from Texas and this story is set in east Texas。 Despite this, it doesn't feel like it。 I can't really place why。3 stars。 Finished it, didn't hate it。 Good book for an airplane or road trip。 。。。more

I have lost track of how many books I have read by Sandra Brown。 I know she certainly tells a story and hold your interest。 This takes place in Texas and Arden Maxwell was only a young girl when her Dad disappeared。 After her mother passed away, he took to the bottle, and with time he was no longer around either。 Her older sister Lisa was her guardian and care taker。 As a young adult she returns to the childhood home and what a story is woven from that day forward。

Linda Look

A 20-year old burglary, one dead, one missing, and two enemies remain。 A family broken apart returns and sets off alarms in this small town。 Fast moving, good characters。 I rate this a 5。0

Amy

3。75 Listened to the audiobook with my husband while on the road。 We both liked it。 Not a page turner but kept our interest until the very end。

Monique

3。5 stars。 Somehow I’ve never read a Sandra Brown and I’m not even entirely sure how this got on my list。 About a quarter of the way in, I had to look her up and realized there’s a genre called “romance suspense”。 Not totally my style but the mystery was solid enough。
